B. Matthew 2:14-15. Was the prophetic saying in Hosea fulfilled in a way anyone would have expected?

1. Compare these verses and answer: Who, ultimately, fulfills the meaning of the name “Israel”?

II. “Israel is My Son, My Firstborn.” Compare Romans 8:29 and Galatians 3:26. In spirit and truth, what is the identity of “Israel“ developing from Scripture?

A. Discuss how this connects with what we have observed in previous studies on the spiritual meaning of circumcision, the seed of Abraham, and the eternal homeland of the great nation promised to Abraham?

B. Compare also 1 John 5:4-5 and Revelation 21:2-3,27.

III. Seeing the same conclusion from another approach: Genesis 32:28. Why was Jacob given the name “Israel”? Was he fighting against God, or refusing to let go?

A. John 8:34-36. True sonship (“Israel”) with God involves:

1. Deliverance from slavery to sin. (Which circumcision provides this? See Colossians 2:11; Romans 2:28–29; Philippians 3:2-3, 9.)

2. Abiding. (Read Hebrews 3:14, 6; Matthew 24:13; Revelation 21:7.)

B. Adam was called the son of God, but Adam did not abide (Luke 3:38; Romans 5:12). Israel as a nation was called the son of God, but Israel did not abide. Both Adam and Israel (the earthly nation) had the TITLE of sonship, but not the substance.

IV. Who belongs to the Israel of God? Preliminary reading: James 1:27; Acts 1:3. Read 1 Corinthians 10:18; Galatians 5:12; 2:16; 6:15–16.

A. Who are the citizens of the nation that inherits the eternal homeland promised to Abraham?

B. How does this knowledge help us understand our place in Bible prophecy? Why is this important?

What is your reaction?
