Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs
Lectionary: 352

Reading 1: Sir 51:12 cd-20 (RSV)
Therefore I will give thanks to thee and praise thee, and I will bless the name of the Lord. While I was still young, before I went on my travels, I sought wisdom openly in my prayer. Before the temple I asked for her, and I will search for her to the last. From blossom to ripening grape my heart delighted in her; my foot entered upon the straight path; from my youth I followed her steps. I inclined my ear a little and received her, and I found for myself much instruction. I made progress therein; to him who gives wisdom I will give glory. For I resolved to live according to wisdom, and I was zealous for the good; and I shall never be put to shame. My soul grappled with wisdom, and in my conduct I was strict; I spread out my hands to the heavens, and lamented my ignorance of her. I directed my soul to her, and through purification I found her. I gained understanding with her from the first, therefore I will not be forsaken.

Responsorial Psalm: PS 19:8, 9, 10, 11
Response: The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls: the testimony of the Lord is faithful, giving wisdom to little ones.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The justices of the Lord are right, rejoicing hearts: the commandment of the Lord is lightsome, enlightening the eyes.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

The fear of the Lord is holy, enduring for ever and ever: the judgments of the Lord are true, justified in themselves.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

More to be desired than gold and many precious stones: and sweeter than honey and the honeycomb.
R. The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart.

Alleluia: See Col 3:16a, 17c
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Let the word of Christ live in you in abundance,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel: Mark 11:27-33
And they went again to Jerusalem. And when he was walking in the temple, the leaders of the priests, and the scribes, and the elders approached him. And they said to him, “By what authority do you do these things? And who has given you this authority, so that you would do these things?” But in response, Jesus said to them, “I also will ask you one word, and if you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I do these things. The baptism of John: was it from heaven or from men? Answer me.” But they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Then why did you not believe him?’ If we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people. For they all hold that John was a true prophet.” And answering, they said to Jesus, “We do not know.” And in response, Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

Saturday, June 3, 2023 – Let’s have a moment with GOD through HIS WORD.

Reflection: In what areas of my life am I holding onto obstinacy and refusing to embrace humility? How can I sincerely pray for a humble heart and open myself to God’s mercy and transformative power in those areas?

Prayer: My unwavering Jesus, You confront those who are proud, arrogant and obstinate with much strength and love. You do so to help them overcome their stubbornness of heart. Give me the grace of humility, dear Lord, so that I will always be able to admit my sin and turn to You in love. Jesus, I trust in You.
